Testimonials

Real People. Real Stories.

The Consumer Advocates for Smoke-free Alternatives Association (CASAA) is collecting successful vape stories and testimonials from smokers who used smoke-free alternatives to quit or reduce their smoking. The testimonials are posted publicly on our website for everyone to see, and may be sent to lawmakers to fight anti-vaping legislation.

This public collection of successful vape stories is a powerful response to those who want to restrict access to e-cigarettes and other smoke-free products. Our goal is to present a large collection of compelling individual reports that will make it impossible for anyone to claim that substitution of low-risk alternatives (e-cigarettes, snus, and other smoke-free tobacco/nicotine products) is not a proven method for quitting smoking.

You are free to write your own story and include or exclude any details as you like. However, if you would like a few suggestions, below is a list of questions to consider:

  • How long did you smoke?
  • How long ago did you start using a smoke-free alternative?
  • Exactly what type of smoke-free products do you use (please do not include company/brand names), and has this changed over time?
  • Do you still smoke, and if so how much have you cut down?
  • Did you both smoke and use the smoke-free product for a time before quitting smoking entirely (if so, how long?), or did you switch immediately? Did you stop tobacco/nicotine entirely for a while and then start using a low-risk alternative?
  • What methods (NRT, Chantix, counseling, etc.) did you use to try to quit smoking before switching to a smoke-free alternative? How long were you able to go without smoking using these other methods before starting again?
  • What changes in the quality of your life (both positive and negative) have you noticed since adopting the smoke-free alternative?

You may prefer to write your story in a word processor and paste it here. You need to enter your entire story at once – you cannot start it and come back. There is no maximum length. Please remember that by submitting this, you are agreeing to have it posted online.

Like many boys growing up in the 50s and 60s, smoking was perceived as being cool and tough; so like an idiot I joined the behind the bike shed crew along with all the other wannabes! I smoked through university and on into my working life. My wife was a smoker (CRC) and our children were/are too. In April 2017 I was trying to save money for a trip to the USA, and was struggling to save as fast as I wanted. The previous year I had spent 6 months trying to get rid of a hacking cough and constant cold; after some 45 years I was also getting sick of yellow fingers, stink breath and clothes and a smelly flat. This gave me the motivation to do something about the whole situation. My workmates, who sat outside as pariahs, were split into smokers and vapers. I was fascinated by their gear and when they explained the cost benefits I was sold. And that was without even discussing health benefits. Halfway through a pack of Menthol 30, I decided enough was enough and that night after work called into **** ******, and for $30 got a pen and 15ml of menthol 12mg. Fortunately enough battery charge to use that evening. The half pack I gave away at work the next day. I soon learned 15ml of liquid was not the best way to buy juice!! So graduated to 100ml bottles, and now spend about $1.00 (not a typo) a week on juice. I get new tanks and batts from China at $1.50 each. (No exploding batteries in nearly 5 yrs either). I have since updated my vape and now spend about $5 a week on juice.   So moving to the health benefits from the obvious financial advantages!! No yellow fingers, no stink breath, fresh clothes, sweet smelling flat and vehicle. No colds or coughs of note, good BP results, eating better now, I can taste food and have even lost weight, and apart from my non related other ailments actually feel almost spritely!! Well very almost. My dog Scottie and I can now walk 3kms a day, his 9 and my 66 need the exercise, and we enjoy this in the morning together. This has been the 2nd best thing I’ve ever done in my life (marrying my wife will always be the first!) and a call I would highly recommend to any current smoker who is considering finances or health. Go for it, call into your local vape shop (not a convenience like me!!) and get some really experienced advice.   Please note in closing that I vape with blueberry menthol flavor and a refillable pod, none of my vaping friends do. Everyone of them vape mainly fruity flavors and hate the thought of going back to a tobacco flavor.

I started smoking Cigarettes at Age 11 as a result of mostly peer pressure as a Paper Boy while we waited for the News Paper delivery truck. 42 years later I had an industrial accident and was off work for 364 days. During this recovery time I was pretty much a Cigarette Chimney until my youngest son expressed his concern about my declining health and He suggested Vaping which I had no clue as to what he was talking about. Wife enters and said I tried it but it was a bit of a "PNA" due to short battery life and the availability of E-Juice, coils and accessories. Jumping forward...and now approaching 67 I can and do what I used to be able to do at half my current age! Vaping has been a lifesaver for not only myself but my Wife's too. We as a couple have helped several couples we know to kick Cigarettes by gifting them a basic "set-up" and everyone of those couples have switched and the best part is that they experienced same or similar results that we have. We will continue support CASAA, our friends and neighbors . HUGz ya'll From D&L

I started in 2009 when it was the wild west. people built mods out of stuff from home depot or flashlights etc. No such thing as a vape shop. Kind of an underground activity all on the internet. I smoked for 30 years and tried everything to quit. After finding e cigs I was able to quit completely in a couple of months and NEVER looked back. I knew if it went mainstream the government nanny state would regulate it to death. Unfortunately I was right

As a breast cancer survivor I vape to keep myself healthy. When I made the decision to vape I was a smoker. Every morning I would wake up and cough up this nasty brown sputum. After one month of vaping my lungs were clear and no more brown yucky stuff. I also have to have my chest scanned due to the cancer and everytime I have a chest x-ray my lungs are as clear as a bell. I can breath now, I sing karaoke and enjoy life. I"m quite sure if I hadn't made that decision that my health would have suffered.

About August of 2009 I had been and was smoking one pack of cigarettes a day and did so for 35 years.. The day I tried a vape product I quit smoking cigarettes and not gone back to cigarettes since, One year after quitting cigs I went in for a medical exame. My doctor noticed that my breathing was much better and the x-ray showed much less tar deposits so he asked me what I had been doing and I told him I quit cigs and started vaping. He said "What is vaping?" So I explained it to him. He said he would begin to recommend vaping to his other clients. I began vaping with using a 26mg nicotine liquid to replace cigs and have been reducing nicotine as time went on. Now I make my own juice and it is nicotine free. I continue to vape because I enjoy it and honestly also because I still have a little bit of hand to mouth habit remaining. Vape on.

I smoked off and on, since age 13. But at age 30 I discovered the so called ‘natural’ tobacco products, and started chain smoking, winding up a two pack a day smoker. 12 years ago, my daughter, who was also a smoker, gave up cigarettes for vaping, and she successfully quit smoking. For Christmas in 2010, my daughter gifted me with a rechargeable vaping device, in hope that I could quit my 2 pack a day cigarette habit. Long story short, I was able to stop smoking after just two weeks of vaping, and I’ve never had a single cigarette ever since. This was 12 years ago, and I still vape. I just got another clean bill of health this year at my annual physical. My MD says my chest X Ray is as if I’d never smoked a day in my life. I tried to quit smoking multiple times before, using nicotine lozenges, Wellbutrin, The Patch, etc etc. nothing ever worked for me until I started vaping. 12 years without a cigarette. That’s my testimony. Zero health issues related to vaping that I or my private physician can detect. Vaping probably saved my life.

I started smoking while serving overseas in the Air Force. From 1969 to 2010, I was a pack-a-day smoker; however, my tobacco use did increase greatly whenever alcohol was consumed. During that thirty-year period, I tried to quit several times but always returned to smoking, usually as a result of a diminished will power caused by alcohol. My longest period without smoking was about five years, during which time I was involved in martial arts training. In 2010, a friend introduced me to vaping. I started vaping as a means to reduce the number of cigarettes smoked in a day. After several weeks, I decided to try a flavored e-juice as a change from tobacco flavor. Since that time, I’ve remained with fruit flavored e-juice, and have gradually reduced my nicotine strength from 24 mg to 3 mg. Many of my friends still smoke, but I can enjoy their company without any desire for a cigarette. I can honestly say that since I started vaping in 2010, I have remained tobacco free. And that addictive relationship between alcohol and tobacco that prevented my early attempts at quitting was finally broken due to vaping. As a realist, I understand that vaping is not risk-free, but the risks are less than those associated with smoking. It’s true that, “people smoke for the nicotine but die from the tar.”

Perhaps it was the lure of how cigarettes were romanticized in old films, or my family of origin… I came from a time where everyone smoked. The odd man out was those who didn’t. Picking up my first cigarette at 12 and putting out my last one at 39, was a process I had convulsed with like a fish laying outside of water. Having intermittently quit to lapse each gestation, eager to resume despite breastfeeding. Smoking cessation aids found me wanting cigarettes more. I began vaping on the 3rd of March 2009 and only volleyed between analog and vaping for one week. Initiating my nicotine replacement at 24mg and now down to ZERO with a few drops of a 3mg. I enjoy the act of smoking, always have. Sure inhaling products into my lungs, is my right to govern myself in the way I choose. I didn’t sign up for the immortal plan. Lawmakers need to get out of our bodies, as that is sacred domain.

I started smoking when I was 10 years old, I am now 52, I tried everything on the market and via my Gp to quit smoking, they worked for about an hour lol in other words they did not work at all, the tablets on script from the Gp had horrific side effects, had me feeling spaced out, the only thing I didn't try was hypnosis, none of it worked, my daughter helped me to get started with Vaping, I vaped (with Nicotine) and smoked to start with, gradually cut out the cigarettes, within a month I was just vaping, I started with 12mg nicotine and cut down by 1mg at a time ( I have depression and PTSD) so wanted to quit with minimum stress. I heard talk about a ban on not just nicotine but vaping all together, I went all out, sent myself broke in order to get enough juice and nicotine to fully quit, and I did quit, not just the nic side but vaping all together, until I started putting on weight (food instead of vaping) then I decided to continue vaping just the juice for a bit longer. What I don't miss, is being crook each winter, a common cold would turn into bronchitis and I was always using an inhaler, the Gp put me on Symbicort for emphysema, now I am off both medications and have not had even the common cold, no bronchitis, I have not even had the flue or covid (touch wood) OVER the counter VAPE gear is the best way to quit, it is these black market sellers who are mixing nasty stuff, they are the ones giving vaping a bad name and they are mostly there and thriving due to the ban and tight regulations that have become imposed on vaping. This talk about under age vaping? the flavours appealing to kids? What about the mixed alcoholic drinks? If you are so intent on banning vaping due to under age then you in all honesty must ban mixed alcoholic drinks.
