Testimonials

Real People. Real Stories.

The Consumer Advocates for Smoke-free Alternatives Association (CASAA) is collecting successful vape stories and testimonials from smokers who used smoke-free alternatives to quit or reduce their smoking. The testimonials are posted publicly on our website for everyone to see, and may be sent to lawmakers to fight anti-vaping legislation.

This public collection of successful vape stories is a powerful response to those who want to restrict access to e-cigarettes and other smoke-free products. Our goal is to present a large collection of compelling individual reports that will make it impossible for anyone to claim that substitution of low-risk alternatives (e-cigarettes, snus, and other smoke-free tobacco/nicotine products) is not a proven method for quitting smoking.

You are free to write your own story and include or exclude any details as you like. However, if you would like a few suggestions, below is a list of questions to consider:

  • How long did you smoke?
  • How long ago did you start using a smoke-free alternative?
  • Exactly what type of smoke-free products do you use (please do not include company/brand names), and has this changed over time?
  • Do you still smoke, and if so how much have you cut down?
  • Did you both smoke and use the smoke-free product for a time before quitting smoking entirely (if so, how long?), or did you switch immediately? Did you stop tobacco/nicotine entirely for a while and then start using a low-risk alternative?
  • What methods (NRT, Chantix, counseling, etc.) did you use to try to quit smoking before switching to a smoke-free alternative? How long were you able to go without smoking using these other methods before starting again?
  • What changes in the quality of your life (both positive and negative) have you noticed since adopting the smoke-free alternative?

You may prefer to write your story in a word processor and paste it here. You need to enter your entire story at once – you cannot start it and come back. There is no maximum length. Please remember that by submitting this, you are agreeing to have it posted online.

I used to smoke cigarettes, then I switched to vaping. Honestly I’d rather vape because it’s better on the lungs than an actual cigarette. Especially the smell of a cigarette overall just stinks and annoying. I’ve been vaping for almost 5 years, I can breathe better, I smell better, I taste better ever since I quit smoking and switched to vaping. I would rather see vapes everywhere than cigarettes in general. I don’t think they are bad for you. Especially overtime the quality of the liquid is so much better and safer.

I was a hard-core smoker since I was 10 years old and I turn 38 in September 2022. I am so thankful for vaping and flavors! It is the only thing that helped me stop smoking. I haven't had a cigarette in over a month now and I feel so much better just from one month of not smoking. Around 28 years of smoking and all it took for me to quit was an amazing harm reduction known as vaping. Thanks to everyone out there fighting to keep vaping available to help save lives like mine! 👍

My name is Vicki, and I'm an ex smoker (3 months free of cigarettes) thanks to vaping. I've only been vaping for 3 months, and I quit cigarettes cold turkey. I am not a dual user. I'm 55 years old, and smoked for 25 years. I use rebuildable tank atomizers and rebuildable drip atomizers with 3 mg e liquid. I don't even miss cigarettes, and the smell actually disgusts me. I tried Chantix, nicotine patches, nicotine gum, hypnotherapy, and countless other methods to quit smoking, but none of them worked. The longest I was able to stay smoke free was 2 weeks. Vaping nicotine is the only thing that has helped me stay smoke free, and the flavors help me. Since switching to vaping, my health has improved. I don't cough anymore, and no more wheezing. My last Pulmonary Function test that was taken after I had switched to vaping for 2 months, was better than the PFT a year ago. I feel so much better, and I'm so happy I switched to a safer alternative, vaping nicotine in flavors that I enjoy.

I started smoking sporadically when I was 14 years old. A couple of years later, I started smoking regularly and continued for the next 42 years. I never tried quitting because I didn’t believe I could. I never got above a pack a day, but when cigarettes started costing so much money, I was literally spending money I could not afford. One day, a gentleman came into my work and offered to allow me to try his ecigarette. The next weekend I bought a rig and quit smoking that Easter Sunday. That was 9 years ago and I can’t tell you how much better I feel. I don’t wake up coughing , no sore throats, and saving so much money was thrilling to say the least. When I heard they were trying to outlaw vaping, I was appalled to say the least. The very thing that saved my life was now being threatened because of teenagers who were using it to get high. I prayed for a long time for something to help me quit smoking, and God answered my prayers. Please don’t let them take my vaping away from me. I don’t want to start smoking cigarettes again. Thank you Lorry

I smoked for 41 years until my husband found out his sister had lung cancer. The same day he stopped at a vape shop & bought a electronic vape home. I tried it for the first time. I like it and haven't smoked cigarettes in years. I hated the smell of cigarettes plus I was just starting to get a cough & weese every morning. After vaping the cough & weese left in two weeks. It was the best thing that happened to me. In my family every person that still smokes cigarettes has a C.O.P.D disorder. I am so thankful for the vape being invented. It has truly saved my life. No doubt!!!

I will be 69 years old in August of 2022. I smoked marlboro cigarettes until 2009 when I was hospitalized for double pheumonia. I was forced to quit smoking, however, I used nicotine gum & patches until 2014 when I discovered vaping. Everyday during those 5 years I obsessed about smoking again, even using the alternative nicotines. I don't obsess anymore & feel so much better physically. Vaping keeps me from even thinking about cigarettes. I have a lung xray every year & my doctor says my lungs actually look better now than they did in 2009. I panic just thinking e-cigs may be taken off the market because I know I would want to go back to smoking again. We must not let this happen. Especially if they are not affecting others. I feel that e-cigs are my only way to stay off cigarettes forever. GB PS. I would order them from other countries if I'm forced to!

Vaping has been a miracle in my life. I smoked for 40+ years and quit a few times but could never remain smoke free that is until I discovered vaping. It was so easy and quick to make the transition and I don't miss cigarettes at all. Horrible morning cough is gone. As so many others have said, smelling like an ashtray is gone. Now I can wear my favorite perfume and really smell it! I don't understand why the powers that be are so against this miraculous device. It seems like more and more of our rights are being taken away. Cigarettes have not been banned. Alcohol has not been banned and we all know the problems that has caused for many many years. And why is tobacco flavor the only choice? Isn't that what we are trying to get away from. I use Cinnamon and Coffee Latte. Seems like we vapors are being pushed into becoming smokers again. What a crying shame. I started out at 24 mg. nicotine and am now down to 3 mg. I suffer from an anxiety disorder and vaping helps me to calm down and focus. Is that a bad thing? At this time in our world with all the crap going on do we need to deny people something as simple as vaping. There are a lot more pressing concerns that far outweigh vaping. Please, I implore whoever has the power to keep vaping legal. Use some common sense.

I smoked a pack a day for over 25 years and it was really taking a toll on my health. I became easily winded by even just climbing stairs, developed a chronic cough, and my chest was always tight. I hated the smell, the dirty ash trays, the occasional burnt carpet spot from dropping one, and the idea of others dealing with my second-hand smoke. I tried many times to quit with the aid of things like nicotine gum and patches. Nothing worked. That is, until I was introduced to flavored vaping. I had my first vape in March 2014, a delicious strawberry vanilla, and that day was my last cigarette. I held on to my cigarettes for 30 days because I was unsure if this new safer alternative would work, but it did - I had absolutely no desire or craving for a cigarette, and the ritual habit of hand to mouth along with seeing the "puff" were completely satisfied by the vapor. Within just a few months my health improved, the coughing stopped, and within 6 months I was exercising without getting winded. Within 8 months a chest x-ray exam showed that my lungs looked healthy, and the doctor was very impressed. My overall quality of life improved, and having a smoke-free household improved the quality of life for my family. Now 8 years later at age 53 I still enjoy vaping, I've tapered the nicotine level down to just 3mg, and I'm in better health / physical shape than I was at 45. Vaping truly saved my life and made me a better person to be around. What I don't understand is how the powers that be could possibly in good conscience try to prevent fully grown adults from obtaining flavored e-liquid and they try to deny that vaping is much safer than smoking in every way. They resort to their notion that flavored vapes could be attractive to teens, but I don't see them taking flavored alcohol off the shelves. Anyone who lives in the real world knows that some teens come from backgrounds that make them predisposed to smoking and drinking, and teens will always find a way to get what they want. It's obvious that the flavor bans have nothing to do with public health concerns, and everything to do with the money the states owe in huge bonds to the big tobacco companies, and keeping those cigarettes on the shelves to collect that tax money to pay those debts. There are now millions of people like me who credit flavored vaping with giving us ability to quit smoking and reduce our risk of several smoking-related illnesses, and who now live a vastly improved life thanks to vaping. Give us our flavors back. We do not want the gross taste of tobacco or the dangers of combustible smokes. Why penalize us for improving our health and the lives of those around us? End this ridiculous flavor ban and give adults our rights back. David, 53, New York, smoke-free for over 8 years thanks to flavored vaping.

I was a 2 pack a day Marlboro red smoker since I was 16. At 30 I started waking up to coughs and lung soreness. I decided it was time to make a change. Thanks to vanilla custard flavored liquid and a simple vaping device I was able to kick an almost 15 year habit over night. Before vaping I’d tried chantix and had some of the worst nightmares ever. I also tried nicotine gum and even nicotine toothpicks. Both were useless. Now I’ve been smoke free for 8 years. I do still vape, but I’m down to 3mg of nicotine. Since quitting the lung pain has gone away and I haven’t had any negative side effects from vaping at all. My energy levels have gone up, o2 levels are up, and I feel better than I did when smoking. The only “negative” was a couple weeks after quitting smoking. I’d heard people say that cigarettes stink for years and never understood. Then my sense of smell and taste came back with a vengeance. I can confidently say now that, yes, cigarettes smell like death.
