A bill (HB 621) known to advocates as “PMTA Registry” legislation has crossed over from the House to the Senate and referred to the Senate Judiciary B committee. At the moment there is no hearing scheduled, but we expect that to change and we’ll update this alert as more information becomes available.

If enacted, this law would change Louisiana’s existing VAPE Directory law by further restricting where retailers can purchase the products they sell. Currently, vape shops can buy directly from manufacturers, but if HB 621 is enacted shops will only be allowed to purchase from licensed wholesalers who make their own decisions about which products to keep in stock.

On its own, the “VAPE Directory” takes away consumers’ legal access to most products that are helping people quit smoking. The addition of a bottleneck at the wholesale level would put even more pressure on consumers to seek out alternative, informal sources for safer nicotine products. This would put independent vape shops out of business, hundreds of workers out of jobs, and thousands of people at risk of returning to smoking, or delaying attempts at quitting.

Please take a minute to send an email to your lawmakers urging them to oppose HB 621!

  • Tell your lawmakers that this legislation is more about protecting Big Tobacco profits than improving public health and share your personal story about switching to vaping.
  • BILL will close down hundreds of small businesses and put hundreds of workers out of a job.
  • The state doesn’t need to carry water for the FDA by enforcing its disastrous anti-vaping regulations.
  • FDA has arbitrarily denied marketing orders for nearly 1 million products and is failing to move forward with authorizing others.
  • If HB 621 is enacted, consumers will only have access to a handful of products that have applications pending, or are authorized by FDA.
  • Be brief, be kind, and say thank you 🙂
