Stop an Excessive Federal Tax on Safer Nicotine Products
11.19.21 – The House has passed the Build Back Better bill, which includes the nicotine tax. Our last chance to have it removed is now in the senate. Please contact your senators ASAP and urge them to oppose this tax!
11.03.21 – [URGENT UPDATE] Following several drafts of the Build Back Better funding bill did not include an outrageous tax on nicotine, the tax has been added back in. Noteably, the 100% increase in cigarette taxes is being left out in favor of taxing safer, smoke-free products at the current rate of cigarettes.
09.13.21 – WSJ – “Here Comes the Biden Tax Bill“
Following months of debate and wooing extreme members of Congress, the proposed federal excise tax (FET) on nicotine is being added back into the funding bill for President Biden’s so-called Build Back Better plan.
Notably, instead of raising taxes on combustible tobacco products, the new language imposes a new tax on nicotine (synthetic or derived) that is equivalent to the tax on cigarettes ($50.33 per 1,810 milligrams of nicotine).
Even if you’ve already participated in this Call to Action, it is URGENT that you contact your federal officials and urge them to reject this dangerous tax.
The table below shows what the proposed tax would be on bottles of nicotine-containing e-liquid. These prices do not include the price of the product itself, only the tax.
